What is the Clean Port Plan?

​

The Port of Redwood City is developing a Clean Port Emissions Reduction, Community Benefit, and Development Plan (The Clean Port Plan) with support from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant. The two-year effort will identify practical ways to reduce air emissions, prepare for climate change and sea level rise, and strengthen partnerships with Port businesses and the community.

The Port plays an important regional role by moving essential materials by ship and rail, supporting jobs, and providing public waterfront access. The Clean Port Plan will help the Port continue serving the region while improving environmental performance and long-term resilience.

Plan Priorities

​

•  Measure current energy use and air emissions

 

•  Set short-, medium-, and long-term emission reduction targets

​

•  Identify strategies for cleaner technologies, vehicles, energy, and operations

​

•  Assess climate and sea level rise risks to Port infrastructure and operations

​

•  Work with Port tenants and community partners on implementation priorities

​

•  Develop a workforce strategy that connects clean port investments to local opportunity

​

Why It Matters

​

•  Cleaner air: The Plan will evaluate emission reduction targets and strategies that support worker and community health.

​

•  Stronger resilience: The Plan will help protect critical Port infrastructure from climate change and sea level rise.

​

•  Community partnerships: The Port will work with businesses and community partners to turn planning into long-term benefits.

​

•  Strategic investment: The Plan will position the Port to make informed investments, adapt to changing requirements, and compete for                                                         future grant funding.

Public Input

​

Community members will have opportunities to provide input when draft emission targets are developed in fall 2026, during workforce strategy development in spring 2027, and when the draft Plan is released for comment in fall 2027. Public meetings will be held at these milestones.
