Full-Scale Emergency Operations Drill at Port of Redwood City

GGIMG_2428

On May 18, 2010, emergency personnel from local, state, and federal levels took part in a full-scale emergency operations drill simulating a terrorist bomb attack at the Port of Redwood City. It was part of California’s annual Golden Guardian exercise, designed to help emergency personnel train for emergency preparation and response.

This drill was the largest in California this year and included first responders and emergency equipment and personnel from the Peninsula and Bay Area, California state emergency operations staff, and California National Guard troops.

The drill started in the morning of May 18 with a simulation of a bomb exploding on a wharf at the Port, followed by another in a different area of the Port’s operations. Staged nearby, emergency staff responded as the emergency situation developed. The event included simulated injuries, triage, collapsed building rescues, decontamination, and other critical emergency activities.

The Golden Guardian Statewide Exercise Series was first implemented by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2004, and has become an annual statewide exercise series conducted to coordinate prevention, preparation, response and recovery mechanisms of city, county and state governmental entities, and private sector and volunteer organizations. The goal of the Golden Guardian Exercise Series is to build upon the lessons learned from this and subsequent exercises conducted throughout the nation, as well as real-world events.
