Earth Day on the Bay and Boat Parade
To Launch Sailing Season Both April 19 at Port

Save the date Saturday, April 19, for two family-filled activities at the Port of Redwood City.

    • Earth Day on the Bay, presented by Marine Science Institute (MSI), from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • The 70th annual 2008 South Bay Opening Day of the Sailing Season, featuring a decorated boat parade, with activities from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Entrance is free to both events.


The Earth Day on the Bay event features these activities:


• Bay rides aboard MSI’s Robert G. Brownlee (reserve spots on-line at www.sfbaymsi.org, a website that also contains more information).
• Shark feeding.
• Environmental information faire.
• Outrigger canoes and Polynesian dancing.
• San Francisco Film Festival, featuring a documentary on the bay oil spill last fall.
• Make ocean arts and crafts.
• Presentation by Al Gore’s Climate Project.
• Music and entertainment featuring Earth Capades and Banana Slug String Band.


Sponsoring the MSI event are Redwood City Saltworks, Cargill, Port of Redwood City, Lyngso Garden Materials, Pete’s Harbor, Green Wine, Wells Fargo, and the San Mateo County Water Pollution Prevention Program.


The 2008 South Bay Opening Day features these activities:

• 8 a.m. pancake breakfast at the Sequoia Yacht Club
• 10 a.m. outrigger races.
• 11 a.m. decorated boat parade and blessing of the fleet.
• Noon barbeque luncheon at the Sequoia Yacht Club.
• 12:30 awards presentation to decorated boat winners.
• 1:30 p.m. a volunteer clean-up of Redwood City Creek and Bair Island.

Participating organizations besides the host Sequoia Yacht Club include: Coyote Point Yacht Club, Los Gatos Yacht Club, Blue Gavel District 14, San Jose Sailing Club, Kilohana Outrigger Club, Peninsula Yacht Club, South Bay Yacht Club, Marine Science Institute, Spinnaker Sailing Center, USCG Auxiliary Division IV, Sea Scouts, Port of Redwood City, and Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association.
